- Edible shoots, pollen and rhizomes — historically a staple wetland food plant
- Often confused with the unrelated Schoenoplectus bulrush — Typha is the species with the brown cigar-shaped seed heads
- Vigorous spreader — for small ponds choose lesser bulrush (T. minima) instead
