Loropetalum chinense

Evergreen Chinese shrub with small leaves (often purple in modern cultivars) and clusters of strap-petalled tassel flowers in pink or white through spring. Related to witch hazel and similarly fragrant in flower.

Growing notes

  • Native to southern China, southern Japan, and adjacent Southeast Asia
  • Modern purple-leaved cultivars (‘Burgundy’, ‘Ruby’, ‘Plum Delight’) are now far more widely grown than the original green-leaved species form
  • Clip well into informal hedges, foundation plantings, and topiary
  • Demands acidic soil — chlorotic on alkaline soils
