Growing notes

  • Plant in sunny well-drained borders — flowers May–June, a striking vertical accent and excellent bee plant
  • Spider-like brittle rhizomes must be planted shallow, spread out, with sharp drainage — root rot is the main cause of failure
  • Foliage dies back by midsummer — site with later-emerging perennials in front to cover the gap
  • Drought tolerant once established, demands hot dry summer dormancy

Pet caution: Foxtail lily is listed as potentially harmful to cats and/or dogs. Keep pets from grazing on it, and contact a vet if you suspect your animal has eaten some.
