Growing notes
- Plant in sunny well-drained borders — flowers May–June, a striking vertical accent and excellent bee plant
- Spider-like brittle rhizomes must be planted shallow, spread out, with sharp drainage — root rot is the main cause of failure
- Foliage dies back by midsummer — site with later-emerging perennials in front to cover the gap
- Drought tolerant once established, demands hot dry summer dormancy
