Native small tree of ancient woodland and old hedgerows, very similar to common hawthorn but more shade-tolerant and slightly earlier flowering.

- Provides safe nesting habitat and berries for thrushes, blackbirds and fieldfares
- More shade tolerant than common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) — succeeds in wood-edge plantings where common hawthorn struggles
