Kentucky coffee tree

Gymnocladus dioicus

Long-lived North American legume with bold compound foliage and brilliant yellow autumn colour. Roasted seeds were an early-American coffee substitute.

Growing notes

  • Raw seeds and pods are toxic — must be roasted at 150 °C for 3+ hours before any consumption
  • Slow growing but exceptionally cold hardy and drought tolerant once established
  • Dioecious — only female trees bear seed pods
