Fast-growing deciduous conifer of the Japanese mountains, with bluer needles and even more rot-resistant heartwood than European larch. Widely planted across western European upland forestry as a faster-growing alternative.

Growing notes
- Heartwood is exceptionally rot-resistant — even more so than European larch, used interchangeably for cladding, boat work, and external joinery
- Distinct from European larch (L. decidua) — Japanese larch has bluer needles, longer cones, and grows around 25% faster on equivalent sites
- Hybrid Larix × eurolepis (L. decidua × L. kaempferi) combines speed and disease resistance and is increasingly the plantation choice in the UK
- Susceptible to Phytophthora ramorum in parts of the UK — current felling restrictions affect new plantings, check before planting
