Tuberous Chilean perennial with leafy stems carrying clusters of bright orange-yellow trumpet flowers streaked with dark markings on the upper petals. Parent of many modern Alstroemeria florist hybrids.

- Native to southern Chile and Patagonia — Mediterranean to maritime climate
- WARNING: Listed INVASIVE in parts of southern Australia and New Zealand — escapes by tuber fragments and seed, do not plant where it can escape; consider sterile commercial cultivars instead
- Among the longest-lasting cut flowers in cultivation — 2 weeks in the vase is normal
- Cultivars in many colours from the Princess and Inca series are now standard commercial cut flowers
