Planting by the sky

How gardeners have timed planting for centuries — by the sun, the moon, and local lore.

Long before anyone drew a hardiness zone map — the colour-coded maps that sort regions by how cold their winters get — the sky was the only calendar a gardener had. The sun's height at noon marked the turning of the seasons, the moon's changing shape counted off the weeks, and local sayings filled in the rest. Every farming culture built its own version of this machinery, and this page tours the best-documented ones. Hold onto one thing as you scroll: we describe these systems, we don't prescribe them. Each was tuned to one place, and none travels unchanged to a new garden — which, in a sentence, is why this site exists.

Four layers every tradition shares

Pull any of these calendars apart and you find the same four layers, stacked in the same order. Once you can see them separately, every tradition becomes easier to read — and easier to judge for your own patch of ground.

The solar frame

Where you are in the year, fixed by the sun. The equinoxes and solstices — the two days of equal light and dark, and the year's longest and shortest days — are the anchor points every culture agrees on.

The lunar month

The moon's roughly twenty-nine-and-a-half-day cycle from new to full and back. It gives each tradition its named nights and its waxing-and-waning lore about when sap rises and falls.

The day-quality layer

Systems that go further and rate individual days as favourable or unfavourable for a given task. This is the layer that promises the most and, as we'll see, holds up the least.

The local overlay

The rules that only work where they were coined: a saying about a saint's day, a star that rises over one particular bay. Priceless at home, misleading abroad.

In the Alpine valleys of Austria and southern Germany, the year's work was governed by the alter Bauernkalender — the old farmer's calendar. Its most famous form is the Styrian Mandlkalender, or "little-figures calendar", which has been printed for roughly two and a half centuries. Instead of words it used rows of tiny saint figures, so a farmer who could not read could still follow the year by the pictures.

Woven through it are the Bauernregeln, short rhymed weather rules pinned to saints' days. Most are forecasts dressed as verse: if the weather does one thing on a given saint's day, expect another to follow. A handful of dates carried extra weight as Lostage, or "lot days" — bellwether days believed to forecast the season ahead. The oldest set were the twelve Rauhnächte, the "rough nights" around midwinter, each said to preview one month of the coming year. Over time the list of lot days grew from those twelve to well over a hundred.

There is a wrinkle worth knowing. When the calendar was reformed in 1582 — the switch from the Julian to the Gregorian system most of Europe still uses — ten days were dropped to realign the date with the sun. Many rules had been learned by heart long before, so a good number of them actually fit the weather about ten days after the date they name. The saying stayed put; the sky moved on.

And how well do they work? Respectably — in the region that produced them. Studies of Central European weather lore find that a fair share of the rules beat chance for their home valleys, precisely because they distil generations of watching one local climate. Carry them to another continent and the skill evaporates. That is this site's founding idea in older clothing: knowledge tuned to a place belongs to that place.

The biodynamic sowing calendar is the twentieth century's most systematic attempt to turn the moon into a planting schedule. Its best-known author, Maria Thun, spent decades sorting the days into four kinds, each matched to the part of the plant it is said to favour: root days, leaf days, flower days, and fruit (or seed) days.

The sorting follows the moon as it passes in front of the twelve zodiac constellations, which are grouped by the four classical elements of old European thought — earth, water, air, and fire. Earth signs give root days, water signs leaf days, air signs flower days, and fire signs fruit days. Sow a carrot on a root day, the calendar suggests, and a lettuce on a leaf day.

An honest caveat. Controlled trials have not supported the constellation effects at the heart of this system: when researchers grow the same crop across the different day types under fair conditions, the predicted differences don't reliably appear. We describe the biodynamic calendar here because it is a rich and influential tradition — not as day-quality advice. This site won't tell you a given day is good or bad for sowing.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori tracked the year with the maramataka — literally "the turning of the moon". Rather than numbering the days, it names each of the roughly twenty-nine-and-a-half nights of the lunar month, and each named night carries its own guidance: some are good for planting, some for fishing, some for rest.

The kūmara, the sweet potato that was the great staple crop, was planted on particular named nights and never on others. Many traditions hold that nothing should be planted at the full moon, nor on the korekore nights — a run of low-energy nights late in the cycle when the sea and the soil are said to be quiet. The months themselves are anchored not by the moon alone but by certain stars rising at dawn, and the whole year opens with Matariki, the reappearance of the star cluster known elsewhere as the Pleiades.

One calendar, many keepers. There is no single maramataka. More than forty iwi (tribal) and regional versions have been recorded, each with its own night names and its own emphasis, shaped by local seas, soils, and skies. Any sequence you see here is one recorded tradition offered as an example — not the definitive calendar, and not a substitute for the knowledge held by the people of a place.

China's oldest planting calendar barely uses the moon at all. The twenty-four solar terms divide the year purely by the sun, into periods of about fifteen days. Their anchor points are the familiar ones — the solstices, the equinoxes, and the four dates that traditionally begin the seasons — and the terms in between carry plain, working names like "grain rain" and "insects awaken".

Each term is split again into three microseasons of roughly five days, giving seventy-two in all. These have some of the most beautiful names in any calendar, because each simply reports what nature is visibly doing: "east wind melts the ice", "grasses and trees sprout", "the peach begins to blossom". Read in order, they are a year-long field diary written in five-day entries.

When the system reached Japan it was kept — but not unchanged. In the seventeenth century a court astronomer rewrote the seventy-two microseason names to match what a Japanese observer actually saw outside, swapping Chinese plants and weather for local ones. Even the most sky-based, sun-fixed calendar of them all was quietly localised to fit a new place. The pattern holds everywhere you look.

The common thread

Set these calendars side by side and the same shape appears in each. A frame built from the sun. A rhythm counted by the moon. A layer of day-by-day judgement. And, holding it all together, a thick layer of local knowledge — the part that makes a calendar work at home and fail politely everywhere else.

That last layer is the point. Every one of these systems is local knowledge formalised: generations of close watching, written down and passed on. It is genuinely valuable, and it genuinely does not transfer unchanged to a new place. Which is exactly the trouble with borrowing a hardiness zone from a garden that isn't yours — the number travels, but the knowledge behind it stays home.
