Chinese clumping bamboo with long, straight, thin-walled flexible canes ideally suited to splitting for weaving and basketry. Used commercially for fine basket and hat work across southern China.

Growing notes
- Canes split easily into long flexible strips for basketry and weaving — the principal commercial weaving bamboo of southern China
- Clumping habit (sympodial) — does not run, far better behaved than the Phyllostachys species
- Reaches 8–15 m tall in good conditions — needs space for the mature clump
- Frost-tender — best in mild temperate to subtropical climates
