About Birch (silver)
Silver birch is a pioneer species: it colonises open, disturbed and burnt ground quickly, grows fast, and is relatively short-lived compared with the oaks and beeches that eventually shade it out. Its bark is waterproof and rich in resins, which is why birch bark survives in archaeological sites long after the wood has rotted, and why it has been used for containers, roofing and as tinder that lights even when damp. The sap can be tapped in early spring. Its light canopy casts noticeably little shade, so underplanting succeeds where it would fail beneath denser trees.
