Aromatic wetland shrub of UK and northern European bogs. Used to flavour beer (gruit) before hops became standard, and a traditional Scottish midge repellent.

Growing notes
- Fixes nitrogen via Frankia bacteria (actinorhizal symbiosis) rather than the Rhizobium of legumes — a non-legume nitrogen fixer
- Extremely cold hardy — survives subarctic conditions
- Foliage rubbed on skin acts as a natural midge repellent in Scottish Highlands tradition
