About Chives
Chives are the smallest cultivated member of the onion genus, and unusually for that group they are grown for their hollow leaves rather than a bulb. They are one of the few alliums genuinely native across both Europe and North America. The round mauve flowerheads are edible, carry the same mild onion flavour, and are a strong nectar source for bees — though letting them run fully to seed will produce a great many volunteer seedlings. Clumps thicken steadily from the base and can be lifted and divided, which is generally how gardeners increase them rather than growing from seed.
