Vigorous evergreen Chinese clematis with long leathery dark-green leaflets and clusters of fragrant pure-white star flowers in earliest spring. The principal evergreen clematis of mild temperate gardens.

Growing notes

  • Plant against a sheltered south or west wall — evergreen leaves are damaged by cold winter winds, succeeds best in protected mild-climate positions
  • Strongly almond-vanilla fragrant in flower — March–April
  • Vigorous — capable of covering 6 m or more, demands strong support
  • Pruning Group 1 — prune lightly only after flowering if needed
