The original deep-mahogany-leaved coral bells cultivar, with maple-shaped leaves in deep purple-bronze and slender stems of small cream flowers in summer. Perennial Plant of the Year (USA) 1991.

Growing notes
- Plant in dappled shade — the principal dark-foliage perennial for shade gardens, foundation cultivar that opened the door to all modern coloured Heucheras
- Tolerates more sun than most Heucheras for the strongest leaf colour
- Flowers in summer on tall airy stems — secondary to the foliage
- Divide every 3–4 years and replant deeper to combat the species’ tendency to lift out of the ground
