Vigorous herbaceous climber grown for the resinous female cones used to flavour and preserve beer. Dies to the ground each winter.

Growing notes

  • Larval host for the comma butterfly and a secondary host for the red admiral
  • Female cones are the brewing hop — male and female plants are separate, plant females for cones
  • Sedative and bitter herb — pillows traditionally stuffed with hops as a sleep aid
  • Can grow 6 m in a single season — needs strong vertical support
