About Jaboticaba (Z4 / Rondonia)
The jaboticaba is best known for cauliflory — it flowers and fruits directly on the trunk and main branches rather than on new shoots, so a cropping tree appears to be encrusted in dark grapes from the bark outwards. The habit is common in tropical forest trees and is generally understood as an adaptation to pollinators and dispersers that move along trunks rather than through the canopy. The fruit has a very short shelf life, fermenting within days of picking, which is why it is rarely seen in shops far from where it grows.
