Growing notes
- Flowers February–April — one of the earliest native wildflowers, traditionally a signal of the swallows returning
- WARNING: Listed INVASIVE in parts of North America — banned in several US states and Canadian provinces, do not plant outside its UK and European native range
- Dies back completely by May — disappears entirely until the following spring
- Tolerates wet shaded ground where little else grows
