About Magnolia (deciduous)

Magnolias are among the most ancient flowering plants still in cultivation, and their flowers show it: they have no true petals and sepals but undifferentiated tepals, and they are built to be pollinated by beetles, which predate bees in evolutionary terms. The flower parts are correspondingly tough. Many deciduous magnolias flower on bare wood before the leaves emerge, which is what makes the display so striking and also what makes it vulnerable — a single late frost at the wrong moment turns an entire season's flowers brown overnight.

Growing notes

  • Late frosts can spoil the flowers in any given year
  • Slow to mature but very long-lived
