Growing notes

  • Brilliant scarlet new growth in flushes through spring and again in summer if clipped — a major modern hedge plant of mild-climate suburbs across Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand
  • Clip lightly in early summer after the first red flush — fresh red regrowth follows within a few weeks
  • Susceptible to leaf spot (Entomosporium) in wet humid climates — give good air circulation and avoid overhead watering
  • Tall growing if unclipped (3–5 m) — provides effective tall windbreak at suburban scale
