About Protea
Proteas take their name from Proteus, the shape-shifting god of Greek myth, a reference to the extraordinary variation in form across the family. They are largely South African, and the king protea is that country's national flower. Like grevilleas they evolved on ancient, phosphorus-poor soils and are damaged by ordinary fertiliser. Many are adapted to fire: some species release seed only after burning, and the woody structures that protect that seed are a direct response to a fire-driven landscape. They demand sharp drainage and resent root disturbance.
