New Zealand native small tree with very small pinnate leaflets and pendant clusters of large bright yellow pea flowers in late winter and early spring. Among the most striking native NZ flowering trees.

Growing notes
- Native to New Zealand — widespread across both islands
- Distinct from the kowhai already in the database (S. tetraptera) — S. microphylla has much smaller leaflets and a more delicate habit
- Major nectar source for tūī and bellbird — flowers in late winter when little else is in bloom
- WARNING: All parts (especially seeds) toxic — keep seeds away from children
