Vigorous southeastern North American native deciduous climber with pinnate leaves and dense terminal clusters of large orange-red tubular flowers through high summer. The classic hummingbird flower of eastern North America.

Growing notes

  • Plant against large walls or pergolas where space allows it to spread — vigorous, capable of suckering and climbing 10 m or more
  • Outstanding hummingbird forage in its native range — flowers continuously through July and August
  • WARNING: Aggressive sucker spreader — sends out underground runners up to 10 m, can colonise lawns and adjacent beds, install root barriers or accept the spread
  • Sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive people — handle with gloves
