About Waratah
The waratah is the floral emblem of New South Wales, and its large crimson flowerhead is composed of many individual flowers packed into a dome surrounded by coloured bracts. Like other members of the Proteaceae it is sensitive to phosphorus and demands sharp drainage, and it is notoriously intolerant of root disturbance and of soil that stays wet. Plants regenerate strongly from a lignotuber after fire. The name comes from the Eora language of the Sydney region, one of a number of plant names taken directly into English from Australian languages.
